Council invites feedback on disability and inclusion plan

Wellington Shire Council is inviting the community to provide feedback on its draft Disability Inclusion and Access Plan 2026-2030, a four–year plan which council says will focus on creating a more inclusive and accessible shire for people with disability.

The draft plan outlines practical actions to remove barriers, improve access to council services, facilities and information, and support people with disability to participate fully in community life. It builds on council’s commitment to access and inclusion and aligns with national and state disability strategies, as well as council’s ‘Live Well in Wellington’ Plan.

The Disability Inclusion and Access Plan focus on improving accessibility across council services and facilities, strengthening inclusive communication and practices, increasing employment and participation opportunities for people with disability, and ensuring lived experience continues to inform council decision–making.

The draft plan has been shaped by local experiences through early, targeted engagement with people with lived experience. Early consultation has included workshops with people living with disability, participants and staff from the George Gray Centre, carers, service providers, students from Sale and District Specialist School and the Wellington Shire Youth Council. Input has also been provided by former members of the Wellington Access and Inclusion Group and the Wellington Disability Advisory Committee, which continues to advise council on accessibility and inclusion priorities across the shire.

Key themes emerging from engagement so far include safety, accessible information, inclusive infrastructure, transport, employment opportunities, and meaningful involvement in decision–making.

Council is seeking broader community feedback to help refine the plan before it is finalised.
