Wellington Shire residents are being encouraged to clear out unwanted hazardous household chemicals and dispose of them safely at the upcoming “Detox Your Home” event at the Gippsland Regional Livestock Exchange (GRLE) in Sale.
Delivered by the state Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action in partnership with Wellington Shire Council, this free and convenient service helps keep hazardous household chemicals out of landfill and waterways.
Many common products found in sheds, garages, laundries and under kitchen sinks can be harmful if disposed of incorrectly. Household chemicals should never be poured down drains or placed in household bins, as they can contaminate waterways, create fire risks in collection trucks waste facilities, and harm people, animals and the environment.
Wellington Shire mayor Cindy Madeley encouraged residents to take advantage of the free service.
“Detox Your Home makes it easy for residents to safely dispose of unwanted household chemicals while helping protect our environment,” Cr Madeley said.
“I urge residents to register for this free event and let the experts dispose of them safely. Every chemical collected is one less potential hazard for our homes and community.”
The event will be staffed by qualified chemists who will identify and sort chemicals before they are transported to a licensed facility for reuse or safe disposal.With community safety in mind, the collection will operate as a drive through and contactless event with no walk ins accepted.
Common chemicals collected at Detox your Home events include:
- Fuels and flammable liquids – turpentine, methylated spirits, petrol, kerosene, diesel, paint thinners;
- Garden – herbicides, pesticides, fertilizers, pool chemicals, poisons;
- Household – cleaners, bleach, ammonia, oven cleaner, solvents, cooking oil, cosmetics, fire extinguishers, and;
- Car – wax, transmission fluid, body filler, brake fluid.
Paint is not accepted at as part of the collection.

Detox Your home will take place at the GRLE, Saleyards Rd, Sale, on Saturday, October 10, between 9am and noon.
