A reader also threatens to divorce

LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

I SEE that after Gippsland MHR Darren Chester’s email census to assess community opinion, his decision is to support gay (homosexual) marriage.

Is he perhaps trying to do the right thing?

But, I would like to point out a couple of things with all due respect.

Most who do not support gay marriage are those in the community that have some difficulty in putting pen to paper, or arguing their case.

About 80 to 90 per cent plus of my community say no, and I point out, they do vote.

I would ask why Mr Chester wants to follow Ireland which is only the 20th country to change its marriage laws.

There are 176 countries left which do not support a change, and I am pleased to announce that Australia is still one of those 176 countries.

If my government does not put this to the people to decide, I am sure those people will show their disgust and disappointment at the next election.

I have said for some time now that if this goes through I would consider getting a divorce, as the couple in Canberra have just announced (and good on them).

I married more than 50 years ago under the Marriage Act between a man and a woman, and if this was to change I would not support the Marriage Act any more.

I would consider the sanctity of marriage destroyed and I know most churches will have a problem with this also.

Gays are screaming “live and let live”, but why do they want to change the Marriage Act to something it was not meant to be?

Why not legalise a union between two people, separate to the Marriage Act?

That is live and let live.
