Our pools should be open on hot days

LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

WELLINGTON Shire needs to listen to the ratepayers of smaller towns in the shire.

I am writing this about Maffra pool’s opening hours and the other pools in the shire affected by this.

A couple of weeks ago the temperature was 35 degrees, and the pool was not opening until 3.30pm.

So many people want to use the pools, and they are shut.

This season’s hours have been cut, and every year this is happening.

They keep increasing the temperature that they open pools by.

This season it’s 25 degrees in peak season.

This is based on the forecast on the previous day at 4.30pm, but as we all know, this is not always accurate.

Last year I experienced days the Maffra pool was closed because of this, the temperature increased to more than 30 degrees — and they still wouldn’t open it.

I have seen children go to the pool, find it closed, then walk to the river to swim.

This is so wrong. Does it take a tragedy to happen for them to address this problem?

All people want is for common sense to prevail, and pools to open on hot days.

We pay for these pools in our rates and our membership fees.

If we don’t speak up, it will only get worse each year.
