CarbonNet is ‘a dog of a scheme’

LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

THE seismic testing which was carried out recently off Golden Beach was opposed by a large number of people who are not only concerned about the industrialisation of their idyllic patch of paradise, but who are also aware of the potential of the CarbonNet project to delay real action to prevent catastrophic climate breakdown well before the turn of the century.

There have been allegations a small number of local residents who seem to be supporting CarbonNet have been intimidating activists, actions which should not go unpunished.

As for CarbonNet, it is a dog of scheme.

Potentially envisioned to sequester carbon dioxide from Latrobe Valley, the fossil fuel proponents see it as a way of legitimising more coal-fired projects in the valley.

If the sequestered carbon dioxide is used to also flush out more oil and gas from Bass Strait to get burnt and so create more carbon emissions, then we really have the fossil fuel Ponzi scheme.

And then there is there cost. Recently the Kemper carbon capture storage scheme in Mississippi in the United States walked away from such a scheme after spending more than $7 billion.
