One Day kayak challenge

Entries will close soon for Sale to Sea’s One Day Disability Kayak Challenge.

Sale to Sea founder, Andrew Bedggood, said the new One Day Challenge covered a distance of 30km from Bairnsdale to Metung and he encourage people interested to get in touch with him.

“This is an inclusive event and people of all abilities can participate in an adventure to overcome adversity and live life to the maximum, enjoying the beauty of the Gippsland Lakes,” he said.

“It is not a race and we aim for all participants to cross the finish line together.

In 2013, Amanda Reynolds from Macclesfield participated in the Sale to Sea Disability Kayak Challenge after losing her leg above the knee two years prior.

“This lady is what the challenge is about and the spirit in which it is held,” Mr Bedggood said.

“Her determination to overcome her own adversity is one of the most inspirational stories to come out of the challenge since the beginning in 2009.”

The challenge aims to encourage active sporting activities for people of all abilities, raise money for families and individuals with permanent or long term disabilities, encourage those living with disabilities to live life on their terms and to raise awareness of the importance of a fully inclusive society.

“As a registered charity, all funds raised provide support to those within our Gippsland East community who have been affected by permanent or long term disability, assisting them to attain or gain an improved quality of life and independence,” Mr Bedggood said.

“Proceeds from previous challenges were used to construct a wheelchair ramp for a local stroke victim and to purchase a custom-made hydraulic lift chair for a local resident with long-term disabilities as a result of an accident.

“These are just a couple of examples, there are many more.”

For safety reasons the challenge can only accept 100 participants, with at least 20 places reserved for those with disabilities who would like to participate.

“I encourage anyone wishing to take part to print off and send in their registration forms by January 31,” Mr Bedggood urged.

Application forms for the Sale to Sea One Day Disability Kayak Challenge can be found on the website, or phone Mr Bedggood on 0407 471 539.
