MAFFRA Dramatic Society Inc is preparing to hit local stages again this month, this time with a production of famed playwright Oscar Wilde’s hilarious comedy, The Importance of Being Earnest.

The upcoming production has been in the works for a few years, with director Brian Teese finally feeling the time was right in 2022.

“It has been gratifying and wonderful to see my particular vision finally make it to the stage,” Mr. Teese said.

The production features an ensemble cast of local talent, many of whom will be familiar faces to local theatregoers.

The lead roles of Jack ‘Ernest’ Worthing and Algernon Moncrieff are played by Kobey Dorber and Jake Watson, respectively, while their respective lovers Gwendolyn and Cecily are played by Niamh Hassett and Ally Orr.

Written by Oscar Wilde in the late 19th century, the story follows two young gents who have taken to bending the truth in order to put some excitement into their lives.

Jack has invented a brother, Earnest, whom he uses as an excuse to leave his dull life behind to visit his beloved Gwendolyn.

Algernon also decides to take the name Earnest when visiting Jack’s young and beautiful ward, Cecily.

Things start to go awry when they end up together in the country and their deceptions are discovered.

The Importance of Being Earnest opened at Heyfield Memorial Hall on Friday October 14 at 7.30pm before performances at The Wedge in Sale on October at 21 at 8pm, and October 22 at 2pm and 8pm.
