AN Upper Maffra West deer farmer made a gruesome discovery last Wednesday morning.
He discovered one of the few remaining Sambar stags on his property, which has been run as a deer farm since 1988, had been shot during the night and decapitated.
The animal was within the confines of the electrically fenced property and the farmer assumed it had been shot with the aid of a spotlight as a shot was heard at 2am that morning.
The farmer told the Gippsland Times there could have been no mistaking the paddock for bushland as it was displaying Landcare signs and had an electric fence.
The incident has been referred to Heyfield police.
