To be held on Saturday, March 14, the by-election follows the resignation of Peter Ryan as Gippsland South MLA on February 2.

The electoral roll will close on Tuesday, February 24.

The full list of candidates contesting the by-election will be known next Friday with the ballot draw to determine the position of the candidates on the ballot paper to take place in Leongatha after 1pm.

Electoral Commissioner Warwick Gately said voting in the by-election was compulsory for all electors on the state electoral roll in the Gippsland South district.

“By law, if you are an Australian citizen over the age of 18, you must be enrolled at your current address and vote or risk a fine,” he said.

“All enrolment forms must reach the VEC by the close of roll at 8pm on Tuesday, February 24.”

Voters can enrol or update their enrolment details at www.vec.vic.gov.au, or pick-up an enrolment form at any Centrelink, Australia Post or Australian Electoral Commission office.

The VEC will write to all enrolled voters for the district before election day, detailing the location of early voting and election day voting centres.

For independent candidates, a completed nomination form must be lodged with election manager Janine Taylor by noon next Friday at the election office at 1 Church St, Leongatha.

A nomination deposit of $350 applies to all nominations.

Late nominations cannot be accepted by the VEC.

To save time at the election office, candidates have been encouraged to pre-fill their nomination form at www.vec.vic.gov.au using the Candidate Helper.

Candidates must, however, deliver their printed barcoded nomination form and deposit for final processing before the deadline.

An information session for independent candidates, discussing the key requirements and responsibilities of nominating for a state by-election, will be held at 1 Church St, Leongatha on Tuesday from 4pm.
