The Labor Party has endorsed Latrobe Valley community advocate, Morwell teacher Carolyne Boothman to challenge incumbent Gippsland MHR Darren Chester in this year’s federal election.
She is expected to lead what Labor is calling ‘a grassroots campaign for a progressive voice for Gippsland’ in Canberra.
“I am delighted to be Labor’s candidate for Gippsland. Having grown up in Gippsland, I want to be a strong and positive voice for people from the Valley, from the coast, and right across east Gippsland. I love this region,” she said.
Speculation of the Liberal-National Coalition government calling an early election, to capitalise on the Trade Union Royal Commission and Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull’s popularity, has been rife since the Australian Electoral Commission began contacting former election officials during December to see if they were ready to begin training.
