CONSTRUCTION of a new roundabout at the junction of Cobains Rd and the Princes Highway on the northern edge of Sale will begin in coming weeks.
Officers at Wellington Shire have been working with the developers of Cobains Estate and VicRoads to plan the roundabout’s construction.
Cobains Estate is a new residential subdivision on the north side of Cobains Rd to the east of the Princes Highway.
The roundabout will improve safety at the highway junction and provide better access for the Gippsland Regional Sports Complex and the new residential estate.
Access to Sale Baptist Church will also be improved by allowing vehicles to enter the highway at the roundabout.
Mayor Darren McCubbin said the new residential development would generate greater road use.
“It was important that this junction was upgraded to cater for the impending increase in local traffic,” he said.
“The roundabout’s construction was one of the conditions of the planning permit which allows for the development to go ahead, with the works to be completed by the developer under council and VicRoads supervision.
“This roundabout will provide a prominent gateway into Sale, as well as slow the highway traffic down as it enters town.
“It will also make turning out of Cobains Rd easier, increasing safety for all road users.”
Relocation of essential services is nearly complete, with works expected to begin along Cobains Rd in the next month.
