New home for foster children’s charity

A BETTER Life For Foster Kids founder Heather Baird wants to thank the community for its support, as she sets up her new temporary premises.

After the charity’s last storage space was broken into and trashed last month, she has set up in a new location at Sale Memorial Hall, which she hopes will last for some time.

“People are pretty generous,” Ms Baird beamed.

“Due to the exposure we’ve had a lot of donations of new stuff, so that’s fantastic.

“Basically it’s just all happening; every day you turn around and there’s something new happening.”

More care agencies have approached the charity, which helps foster children from Dandenong to Bairnsdale and beyond.

Ms Baird packs bags with clothing, toiletries, and essential items for the children, who often arrive at foster care with nothing but the clothes they’re wearing.

She also supplies toys, books, clothing, and furniture for foster parents.

“We’ve just started our sponsor a bag deal, which is $25 for younger than teens and $50 for teens, and that provides kids with a suitcase and toiletries, and the clothing we can put in,” she said.

The next step for A Better Life For Foster Kids is finding a permanent home, and Ms Baird is hoping she can eventually fund a minivan, which would allow her to make more deliveries as well as provide excursions for children.

“We’re getting there; we had the Electrical Trades Union out at Esso donating $500 to repair the damage done (at the previous location),” she said.

“I’m looking for a place with a decent rent that we can afford.

“Finding a shop that’s suitable, or a house with a shed, that’s the big problem now.”
