Committal hearing for accused Marist Brother

FORMER St Patrick’s College, Sale, teacher Marist Brother Gerard Joseph MacNamara will face a committal hearing in the Melbourne Magistrates Court on Monday, March 19, charged with multiple indecent assaults committed against boys at St Paul’s College, Traralgon, in the 1970s.

Between 1960 and the early 2000s, Brother McNamara taught at schools around Victoria, New South Wales and South Australia, including at Sale, Traralgon, Mt Gambier, Bendigo, Forbes, Preston and Wangaratta.

The former school principal was charged last year with multiple indecent assault offences against five boys at Traralgon.

Old school photos and records from the 1970s are expected to form part of the prosecution case.

McNamara has been on bail since being charged.

The hearing is scheduled to last for up to three days.

The media will be allowed into the court room during the opening procedures but not while the victims are giving evidence.
