O’Brien moves to frontbench

GIPPSLAND South MLA Danny O’Brien has been promoted to the state shadow cabinet.

Mr O’Brien has been handed the portfolios of sport, veterans, gaming and liquor regulation.

Mr O’Brien takes over the portfolios from fellow Nationals MP Tim McCurdy, who resigned from the opposition front bench after being charged by police with offences related to property sales in 2009.

Mr O’Brien said he was looking forward to taking on these responsibilities, in addition to representing the needs of the Gippsland South community.

“Sport is what makes most of our local communities tick and the local football and netball club is often the heartbeat, particularly of small country towns,” he said.

“Likewise, our RSLs do a fantastic job supporting our veterans, while hotels act as a social and economic hub in many of our communities.

“I will be working hard to ensure the Andrews Labor government is kept honest in these areas and also to deliver policies from the Liberal Nationals that will help strengthen our sporting clubs and the veteran community.

“It will be important too, to ensure a strong framework for the liquor and gaming sector that is well regulated and minimises harm.

“I look forward to rolling up my sleeves and getting into the new portfolio while retaining the people of Gippsland South as my number one priority.”
