Man in court over Maffra fire

THE 45-year-old man accused of deliberately lighting a fire that caused about $2 million damage at Anderson’s Removals on August 6 last year will face Latrobe Valley County Court for a directions hearing on Monday.

Donovan Finn was arrested by Wellington Crime Investigation Unit two days after the fire that destroyed an office and a warehouse containing the belongings of about 30 storage customers.

During a committal hearing at Sale Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, Finn pleaded guilty to five charges, including intentionally destroying property, burglary, theft, possessing cannabis, and unlicensed driving.

A separate charge of breaching a community corrections order will be heard at Sale Magistrates’ Court on February 15.

The fire at the Andersons Removals Maffra headquarters in Malmo St began about 2.15am on the Monday morning, and quickly engulfed the main office and storage shed.

It took two hours for CFA crews to bring the blaze under control, but the fire was still being extinguished later that morning.
