NEED for Feed is calling on drought-stricken farmers in Wellington Shire to register to receive free fodder from a hay run planned for the Australia Day weekend.
In a true show of the Aussie spirit, a convoy of about 12 semi-trailers, along with about 10 various utes and ordinary trailers, will arrive in Sale tomorrow.
The volunteer drivers will stay overnight at the Sale Showgrounds, where local Lions Club members will cater for them during the evening.
Hay will be delivered in the Wellington Shire communities of Longford, Seaspray, Giffard and surrounds, followed by Briagolong and surrounds, before the convoy heads to east Gippsland for more deliveries.
Organiser Don Petty said he knew there were “many, many” farmers in the area who were struggling to feed their stock, and things were not getting any easier.
“We know some people have been too proud to ask for help, and others can’t navigate their way around the website,” he said.
“But this assistance is available, so we urge farmers to register so that we can get feed to them.”
Mr Petty said anyone who did not have internet access or had limited experience using digital media should ask a friend, neighbour or family member to help them register.
“We’ve had one lady in another community who ended up taking the lead and helping many other farmers register, so that’s what we hope will happen,” he said.
People are welcome to donate to the cause, or register for feed, on the website.
