A BRASS altar cross, lectern Bible and large prayer book were stolen at the weekend when Boisdale’s St George’s Anglican Church was broken into.
Thieves broke down the door and ransacked cupboards before stealing the church’s treasured items.
Shocked parishioners discovered the damage when they arrived to set up for a service on Sunday.
The Rev Janet Wallis said the cross was about 30cm high, and the big prayer book, which had been donated by a parishoner, was about 30cm by 45cm.
“It’s very disappointing to find this wanton vandalism,” she said.
“We’re a small community and work really hard to keep this going.
“To have this happen is really disheartening.”
The Rev Wallis said it appeared the damage occurred overnight Saturday, as a parishioner had noticed the church gate closed on Saturday evening, but it was open on Sunday morning.
She praised the efforts of police who turned up promptly.
If anyone sees the items or has any information, they are being urged to phone Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or Sale police station on 5142 2200.
The Boisdale Public Hall Facebook page commented “We will pray for these delinquents, but hopefully the police actions will be a lot harsher”.
