Man shot by police at Alberton

A MAN has been shot by police after allegedly assaulting a policewoman at Alberton.

The man allegedly charged at police officers with a weapon when they arrived at an incident about 11.20am on Tuesday.

A policewoman was allegedly assaulted before the man was shot by another officer.

Police said he was struck in the upper body and was treated at the scene, on the corner of the South Gippsland Highway and Turnbull St. and was then taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The man remained in hospital on Wednesday morning and is yet to be charged.

Police said detectives from the Armed Crime Squad were investigating the incident with oversight from Professional Standards Command, which is standard protocol after a police shooting.
