THE federal government’s announcement on Monday to award the Star of the South Offshore Windfarm Project off the Gippsland coast Major Project Status, means that it’s only the second current project in the state that’s earned that status.
Star of the South is one of 25 projects across Australia with Major Project Status, and only the second from Victoria.
The news means it has been recognised as a project of national significance. Costing between $8 billion and $10 billion, the project will deliver renewable energy (up to 2.2 GW capacity) to the National Electricity Market. It aims to supply up to 20 per cent of Victoria’s electricity, and will help Australia reach net zero by 2050.
The other scheme holding Major Project Status in Victoria is the Goschen Zircon and Rare Earth Minerals Project. More than half of the other projects are in Western Australia.
First in industry projects often pose complex regulatory considerations, and the federal government’s awarding Major Project Status to the Star of the South means it can receive tailored regulatory facilitation services for three years – to ensure they meet their obligations without unnecessary regulatory delays.
Star of the South chief executive, Charles Rattray, said Major Project Status would help the project navigate government approvals processes spanning several departments and jurisdictions.
“Star of the South is investing in the local economy while also supporting the transition of energy and jobs,” he said.
“As the most advanced offshore wind project in Australia, we’re helping pave the way for this new industry to grow, so this is good news for everyone involved.
“Major Project Status will boost coordination and efficiency in how we work with government so the best possible outcomes can be reached as soon as possible.”
