A SUSPICIOUS fire at a disabled access toilet in Yarram on Sunday morning is being investigated by Wellington Crime Investigation Unit detectives, with the toilet itself to remain closed for at least a month.

Police say the blaze is believed to have started at the toilet block, which is at Memorial Park on Commercial Rd, at around 5.20am and is being treated as suspicious.

A spokesperson for Wellington Shire Council said on Monday it would be meeting with a builder that day to assess damage and determine best steps.

Anyone who witnessed the incident or has information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential report online at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au

“Early (Sunday) morning, CFA and local police responded to a fire at the public toilets at Memorial Park Yarram. The fire was contained to the all-abilities cubicle, causing some fairly serious superficial (but not structural) damage,” the spokesperson said.

“The building remains intact, and the other three cubicles are still available for use,” the spokesperson said.

“The all-abilities cubicle is expected to be out of action for at least a month, possibly longer as we work through insurance, quotes, and engage a contractor for repairs. We’re working hard to reopen the all-abilities cubicle as soon as possible and will update you when we know more.”
