Countdown to tennis finals

THE penultimate round of matches before the Wellington tennis finals will be played on Saturday.

Players will be looking forward to returning to the courts after last weekend’s round was abandoned because of rain.

With the Maffra Aces and Seaspray safe in the top two, the remaining five teams are battling to claim the third and fourth places in the finals.

Third-placed Sale X Factor is only two points ahead of Sale Big Brother in fourth with Heyfield one further back and the Maffra Kings 0.5 behind. Bottom side the Maffra Queens are 9.5 outside the top four and need to win both their remaining matches to keep their finals hopes alive.

The match of the round will be at Maffra between the ladder leading Maffra Aces and Sale X Factor. With Sale Big Brother having the bye tomorrow, X Factor will sit more comfortably in the top four with victory.

The winner of the match between Heyfield and the Maffra Kings could push its way past Sale Big Brother into the top four.

Victory at home is a must for the Maffra Queens against second-placed Seaspray.

THE Wellington Gippsland Tennis Association Championships will be held at the Maffra Lawn Tennis Club this Sunday from noon.
