Quality field for Classic Pairs

A CAPACITY field of 42 teams will contest the Sale Bowls Club Men’s Classic Pairs next Monday and Tuesday.

The event, carrying national rankings points, a $2000 first prize and a total prize pool of $4700, has attracted players from across Victoria and New South Wales.

The field includes current Australian team member and 2013 Australian Open champion Aaron Wilson, who will partner Victorian Open pairs runner-up Neil Jebb.

Garry Ball, fresh from his win in the Numurkah Gold Nugget pairs, will team up with former world and Malaysian champion Safaun Said.

A combination to watch will be Sale’s Ken Sceney and Numurkah’s Geoff Sutcliffe.

Other players taking part will be 2013 Australian indoor champion Tony Wood, Commonwealth Games gold medallist James Reynolds, former Victorian state team player Michael Wilks and rising star Mitch Cole.

Two-time Yallourn Classic runner-up Graeme Spencer is combining with this year’s runner-up Graham Rogers.

The tournament was first held in 1981, when it was won by brothers Ian and Sandy Caines, who will be back 35 years after that victory.

Current Sale club champion Matt Higgins with Mick Partridge, North Gippsland pairs champion Wayne Morris from Sale Golf and Steve Scrozynski, and former local Bruce Warr with Sale’s Steve Chalmer are some of locals who will be competing.

Over 60 state team representative and current Victorian Country Master pairs champion Frank Tonn and Ray Storey teamed up in 2015 and finished runner-up in the state pairs at Bendigo.

Play begins Monday at 10am and 9am Tuesday. Spectators are welcome.

The women’s Classic Pairs will be held on April 30 and May 1, with entries now open.
