Parrots pass test

GIPPSLAND League football ladder leader Leongatha passed its first test of the season, defeating Traralgon by three points in the year’s second grand final rematch.

After only kicking three goals for the first three quarters on Saturday, the Parrots doubled their goal tally in the final term to turn an eight-point deficit into a 6.5 (41) to 5.8 (38) victory.

It was the only single figure margin the Parrots have had this season. Their more accurate kicking for goal six goals from 11 scoring shots compared to the Maroons’ five goals from 13 was the telling factor in the result.

Without league leading goal kicker Chris Dunne, Zak Vernon and Brok Davidson booted two goals each for the home side. Dylan Loprese and Lee Stockdale also kicked two each for the Maroons.

WONTHAGGI overcame Morwell on Sunday.

Leading by three points at three-quarter-time, the Power won a high-scoring final term and the match 14.6 (90) to 12.11 (83).

The visitors began strongly, kicking six goals to one in the first term, before the Tigers rallied in the second and third quarters.

The Power responded to the Tigers’ midfield challenge during a tense final term, in which the home side had its chances to claim victory.

The win moved the Power back into fourth place on the ladder, and keeps the Tigers in ninth.
