Swimming titles in Sale this weekend

ALMOST 500 swimmers from seven clubs are expected to attend the Gippsland Swimming Championships in Sale over the Labour Day long weekend.

The event will be hosted by East Gippsland Water Dragons Swimming Club at the Lex Glover Regional Aquatics Complex.

It will the ninth consecutive year the championships have been held in Sale. That run will stretch to at least 10, with the event returning next year.

Gippsland Swimming credited the support of Wellington Shire Council and the facilities available at the Lex Glover Regional Complex as the reason for securing the championships in Sale so frequently.

The addition of solar heating, gas back-up heating, new improved starting blocks, exceptional pool maintenance and shade structures have each helped position the complex as the location of choice.

Gippsland Swimming president Jacqueline Madden said the cream of the region’s swimmers would be competing in what is the culmination of a 13-event local summer season.

“Many swimmers will also be going on to compete at All Junior in Melbourne and national age championships in Sydney  during April,” she said.

“With one swimmer already confirmed as competing and one technical official working, at the Commonwealth Games to be held during April on the Gold Coast, we are looking forward to a fantastic finale to our local swimming season.”

The championships will be held from Saturday to Monday, with heats from 8.30am each day.

Finals will begin at 3pm on Saturday and Sunday, and 2pm on Monday.

Spectators will be welcome.
