Gymnasts on state team

MAFFRA Gymnastic Club is thrilled to have a record seven athletes and a coach selected to the state trampoline team.

The group will travel to Melbourne at the end of the month to compete in the nation’s premier gymnastics competition.

The Australian Gymnastics Championships is held over two weeks, attracting the best gymnasts from around the country.

Olympians and Olympic hopefuls will take the floor during the competition, in what is for many, the culmination of years of hard work.

The Maffra cohort will be led by head coach Robyn Dowse, a former national tumbling champion and member of the Australian tumbling team.

The number of athletes qualifying for such a prestigious event is testament to the hard work being put in by everyone, at every level of the club.

Trampoline athletes Tom Finlay and Aaron Benc have competed at nationals before, and will be looking to encourage newcomer Henry Noble at the event. All three will compete in the double mini trampoline event, Aaron and Henry at the national level and Tom at the international level.

They have been training hard to perfect their technique and neaten up their skill execution before heading to Melbourne.

Four girls from the local club have qualified in the tumbling discipline; Tess O’Toole, Katelyn Henderson, Ella McCubbin and Holly Medhurst.

Katelyn competed at nationals in 2017 and is looking to improve on her current ranking of 16th in Australia. She is excited to be able to share the experience with her close friends for 2018.

Tess, Holly and Ella will be competing at the nationals for the first time, an exciting prospect as all the girls have previously been as spectators to the event.

Maffra is well on its way to establishing itself as a premier regional centre for gymnastics development, with a range of programs on offer and a motivated and passionate coaching team who are always looking to develop their own skills for the benefit of the community.

With the much anticipated Cameron Sporting Complex extension looking more promising, the gym is set to expand even further.
