TWO catch up matches were played on Sunday to complete the Latrobe Valley Soccer League home-and-away season.

Falcons took the Australia-Italian Cup with a 1-0 win over Morwell rival Fortuna.

These rivalry matches bring out the best in both teams, and league champion Falcons was pushed all the way by a determined Fortuna.

Falcons got on board with a Sam Amaira goal at 17 minutes which drew him level with team-mate Jessie Kennedy to take out the league goal scoring award with 18 each.

Fortuna threw everything at Falcons, but the tight defence stood tall.

Just after half-time, Falcons was reduced to 10 men after a red card incident but the champion held on to drag out a 1-0 victory to earn a bye in the first round of the finals.

Falcons finished the season 12 points ahead of secondplaced Newborough-Yallourn United.

MOE United claimed the bragging rights over neighbour Monash, coming from behind to win 2-1.

Monash played well for the first half, keeping Moe out of range, and was on target 28 minutes in when consistent Ethan Lawrence fired a rocket to beat the Red Devils keeper Peter Albanese.

The Wolves steadied in defence, keeping the usual busy Moe strikers to minimum disposals.

Moe attacked after half-time, and eventually the pressure was too great for Monash, which cracked with only eight minutes to play when it allowed Nick Dastey to even the score.

Three minutes later, Moe gained a break with a good goal from Noah Kane.

Luckily for Monash, it lives again and play off in a finals match this weekend.

FORTUNA won the reserves and second divisions championships, and Traralgon City the women’s.
