EG hockey finals underway

THE East Gippsland Hockey Association semi-finals were played in chilly conditions at Nagle College, Bairnsdale, on Saturday.

Swan Reach defeated minor premier Sale 3-2 in the open match to go straight to the grand final, and Sale will now have to play Orbost in the preliminary final this Saturday, after it defeated Wellington 6-1 in the minor semi-final.

Sale defeated Maffra 2-0 in the women’s major semi-final, with Sarah Boag scoring both goals. Swan Reach defeated Orbost 9-0 to set-up a preliminary final against Maffra.

It was a similar story in the under 18s, with Sale winning against Maffra 3-2, and Maffra to play Orbost in the preliminary final.

Maffra will play in the under 15s grand final after defeating Sale 5-1, and the Swans will need to defeat Nagle next week.

Wellington’s under 13s live to fight another day after defeating Maffra 3-0, and will face Sale next week after Swan Reach won 1-0.

The preliminary finals will all be played at Swan Reach, with action starting at 9am.

Wellington will host the grand finals at Lions Park, Sale, on September 15.

The association’s best-and-fairest winners were also announced, with Sale’s Prue McNaughton winning the women’s award, and Swan Reach’s Dale Murrell winning the open.

Adele O’Doherty from Maffra won the under 18 girls, and Jess McGowan was the under 15 girls winner.

Sale’s Tom Wrigglesworth drew in the under 15 best and fairest and won the under 13s.
