Redlegs prevail against Magpies

A GALLANT Sale lost the Gippsland League under 16s grand final by 27 points.

The Magpies trailed by 22 points at half-time before fighting back to get within nine by the final change, but the Redlegs held off the challenge to win 9.15 (69) to 6.6 (42).

Bairnsdale settled first, and could have blown away the Magpies in the first quarter, but kicked three goals from nine scoring shots. The Magpies kicked a goal through Cooper Whitehill to trail by 17 points at quarter-time.

The Redlegs kicked the only goal of the second term to take a 22-point lead into the main break.

The Magpies lifted in the third quarter, with Mason Benson kicking two goals and Angus Tilley and Malakai Nico one each to bring the deficit within two majors by three-quarter-time.

Two quick Bairnsdale goals early in the final term ended Sale’s challenge. Sam Smith kicked Sale’s only goal of the quarter, as the

Redlegs booted three to claim their first Gippsland League under 16s premiership.

Tyran Rees kicked four goals in a best-on-ground performance for Bairnsdale.

Sale’s best players were onballers Blake Safstrom and Whitehill.

TRARALGON held Bairnsdale goal-less for three quarters on its way to securing back-to-back under 18s premierships.

Scores were level at quarter-time, but the Maroons than kicked nine unanswered goals to win 11.11 (77) to 2.4 (16).

Harvey Neocleous won the AFL Victoria Country Medal for best-on-ground.
