Eagles upset in reserves

THE Maffra reserves lost one game in 2018 — the one that mattered most.

The Eagles lost the grand final to Leongatha by eight points, with ill-discipline costly.

The Eagles gave away silly free kicks and 50 metre penalties at crucial times. The Eagles fought back, but couldn’t make the most of their chances during the final term.

Leongatha led by a point at quarter-time, and the scores were level after an even second term.

Goals from Nick Wozniak and Ryan Thatcher gave the Eagles an eight-point lead early in the third quarter, but the Parrots responded with two of their own to lead by five points at the final change.

Maffra had chances to take the lead in the fourth quarter — booting four behinds — but the Parrots were gifted a goal after a 50m penalty to stretch their lead to eight points with three minutes to play. The Parrots held firm to claim their first reserves flag in six years.

Leongatha winger Harrison McGannon was named best-on-ground.

Onballer Jesse Ross was hard at the ball, winning possession at crucial moments for the Eagles, while Luke Shelton was strong in defence.
