Maffra Cup on Sunday

THE Maffra Cup will be the highlight of Sunday’s Sale race meeting.

Apart from the $50,000 race over 1400 metres, the day will include a car display from the Newry Eights Rod and Muscle Car Club, music from Justin Rebbechi, and free jumping castle for the children.

The first race will be at 12.25pm, with the cup at 4pm.

Among the chances is Gimme Strength, trained for Ciaron Maher and David Eustace.

Before being transferred from the Darren Weir stable, the five-year-old gelding had back-to-back wins at Ballarat and Bendigo over 1600m. Drawn barrier one.

Legale, for the Hayes-Dabernig team, and Michael Dee in the saddle, is coming off a 20-week spell. The four-year-old gelding showed form in Melbourne last spring over 2000m.

Starting from barrier three, Street Sheik, trained by Patrick Paynem came second last start in a 1200m race at Pakenham three weeks ago.

Eagle Ridge, trained by Michael Moroney, won at Cranbourne over 1200m earlier this month.

Free bus services will pick up racegoers from the Maffra Community Sports Club at 11.30am, Lakeside Club, Sale, at noon, and Criterion Hotel, Sale, at 12.05pm, and leaving the track at 5.45pm.
