Kendall Cup attracts quality

BAYSIDE Argonauts and Latrobe United were the winners when Sale United Football Club hosted its annual Kendall Cup tournament on Saturday.

State league Latrobe United defeated Sale United 2-1 to claim the inaugural women’s cup.

Best-on-ground in the final was Latrobe’s Elise Winkle.

The women’s tournament also featured the Gippsland Soccer League youth girls’ team.

Sale’s Anouk Meereboer was the player of the tournament, ahead of leading goal scorer Abbey Taylor (Latrobe),

Madelaine Breakspear (Sale), Cassie Morrie (Sale), Chloe Martin (Latrobe) and Winkle.

GSL’s Belinda Hua was named the best goalkeeper.

In the men’s final, state league outfit Bayside Argonauts defeated Latrobe Valley Soccer League champion Newborough-Yallourn United 2-1. Bayside’s Max Murray was best-on-ground.

Player of the tournament and leading goal scorer was Damon Scott from NYU.

Rob McKenna (Bayside), Jake Richardson (Sale), Connor McAuliffe (East Gippsland United), Fraser McGregor (Bayside) and Murray were also among the best players.

East Gippsland’s Connor McAuliffe was named the best goalkeeper.

Raffles and auctions of sporting memorabilia raised $1000 for the Mallacoota Soccer Club, which was hard hit during the recent bushfires.

In round one of the LVSL season, Sale United will play Traralgon Olympians away from home on Sunday, March 15.
