Money for upgrades

THREE Wellington Shire sporting clubs will upgrade their facilities with help from the state government.

Six community-led projects across Gippsland will share in more than $1.7 million in funding from the Latrobe Valley Authority’s $20 million Community and Facility Fund.

A new changeroom pavilion will be constructed at the Woodside Recreation Reserve thanks to a $348,689 grant for the Woodside Football-Netball Club.

The new accessible pavilion will provide changeroom space for all football teams, allowing the club to introduce all-female Auskick and other programs.

Maffra Lawn Tennis Club will receive $299,830 to revamp its facilities, including a new kitchen, changerooms and storage.

West Sale Bowls Club will receive $79,816 to install a commercial kitchen, and accessible toilets with entry ramps.

Burrage Reserve, Newborough, will receive $447,924 for a new pavilion, helping attract new members for the Newborough-Yallourn United Soccer Club, Moe United Soccer Club will enjoy being able to train and compete at night, with a $176,075 grant to install a new sports lighting system at Olympic Park, and Yallourn-Yallourn North Football-Netball Club will receive a $386,899 grant to construct a new netball court and lighting at George Bates Reserve.

Eastern Victoria MLC Harriet Shing said local sport was the lifeblood of country towns.

“They deserve to have the best facilities to help their clubs grow and host great community events,” she said.

Fellow Eastern Victoria MLC Jane Garrett said these projects would improve much loved community sporting facilities and provide a boost to local businesses involved in bringing the projects to life.

More than 230 community groups across the greater Latrobe Valley region are now seeing the benefits of improved facilities thanks to the state government’s Community and Facility Fund, delivered as part of the LVA’s $266 million package.

LVA chief executive Karen Cain said the projects would encourage participation, inclusion and increased visitation to the region.
