THE Sale-Maffra under 17s girls’ team won the Sophie Molineux Trophy after winning both its matches on Sunday in Bundalaguah.
This season’s Gippsland Cricket League Junior Country Week girls’ competition was reduced to a one-day event, with three associations, Sale-Maffra, Bairnsdale and Latrobe Valley, playing a twenty20 round robin.
Sale-Maffra began the day with victory over Latrobe Valley.
Latrobe Valley was bowled out for 48, with Tilly Pendergast taking 2-1.
The Sharks finished their 20 overs on 5-120. Abby Wrigglesworth retired on 20, while Acacia Sutton was unbeaten on 18 and captain Lily-Mae Lyndon retired on 16.
Sale-Maffra then proved too strong for Bairnsdale, scoring 148 without losing a wicket.
Wrigglesworth again retired, this time on 29, while Pendergast retired on 21, Sutton 17, Lyndon 16 and Felicity Clissold 13.
Bairnsdale was bowled out for 73 in reply. Jazz Anstee, who was later named player of the tournament, took 3-6 and Matilda Berns 3-1.
This year was the first time the girls were playing the perpetual trophy, named after current Australian team member, Sophie Molineux from Bairnsdale.
