Victory for clinical Maffra

MAFFRA’S open team put on a clinical performance to take the points against Nagle 4-1 during the second round of East Gippsland hockey.

At the Gippsland Regional Sports Complex on Saturday, captain-coach Peter Stewart put Maffra in the lead midway through the first half.

Maffra continued to pressure the attack with a strong passing game until Rohan Giblett scored midway through the second half. Stewart added his second goal two minutes later to give Maffra a three-goal lead.

Nagle worked hard to score via Ren Crunden-Smith, before Jess Cull consolidated the win for Maffra.

The women’s match was tight and scrappy in the first half before Maffra took the lead through Jess Cull. In the second half, Maffra began to get back into a good rhythm to round the match with a 4-0 win.

Cull added a second goal, while Adelle O’Doherty and Meg Mogridge added one goal each.

Elsewhere, Swan Reach had the better of Wellington at home, and Sale’s women’s team drew with Orbost 2-2.

Tomorrow, Maffra will host Orbost, Sale will head to Swan Reach, and Nagle will host Bairnsdale, while Wellington will have the bye.
