SALE secured the East Gippsland Hockey Association open minor premiership after defeating Wellington 8-0 on Friday night.
After Jacob Harrington scored the opening goal at the Gippsland Regional Sports Complex, Leonard Van der Velden found the back of net four times and Michael Palmer three.
On Saturday night at the GRSC, Swan Reach defeated Maffra 3-1 to consolidate second place on the ladder. Mike Irvine scored twice and Jason Lavell once for Orbost, while Maffra’s goal came from Lachlan White.
Maffra narrowly trails fourth-placed Orbost, who had a 0-0 stalemate with Nagle on Saturday, and can move into the finals with victory over Wellington tonight.
MAFFRA replaced Swan Reach in second place on the women’s ladder with an 8-2 victory. Jess Cull, Caitlin Frisina and Meg Mogridge each scored two goals for Maffra, with one each from Adelle O’Doherty and Kate Steinmann, while Rebecca Corben and Sarah Grixti scored for Swan Reach.
Sale maintained its ladder lead with an 8-1 victory over Wellington. Valerie Saunders scored five goals for Sale, with one each from Sarah Boag, Abbie Harrington and Stacey Palmer.
With Wellington short on numbers, it was loaned Sale players throughout the match to ensure a competitive contest.
A win over Orbost on Saturday will give Sale the minor premiership.
Orbost defeated Nagle 3-2, with Casey Findley, Leanne Gladstone and Kerryn Volk scoring for the home side.
THE final round of the home-and-away season begins on Friday night at the GRSC, where Wellington will play Maffra in the women’s and open grades. The two clubs’ junior sides will play on Saturday, following Sale’s matches against Orbost.
Swan Reach will host Nagle on Saturday.
