A true-blue underdog story was written in Round 17 of the North Gippsland Football Netball League, with Cowwarr’s A-Grade netball team defeating ladder leaders Woodside 45 to 43.

Heading into the match, Cowwarr had won five games from 15 starts, placing them eighth on the NGFNL ladder; not a fantastic season for the Saints.

Contrarily, Woodside had only lost one game for the entire season.

In their last encounter back in Round 6, the Wildcats wiped the floor with the Saints in a 64-30 trashing, prompting any seasoned punter to place straight bets on Woodside coming out on top in Round 17.

But sport is unpredictable, and a surprise victory for the Saints came in an unforeseen circumstance.

Cowwarr playing-coach Eden Bourke said their win on the weekend was unexpected.

“We went into the game pretty relaxed,” she said.

“We played the first quarter in our normal positions and we planned to change it up and have a bit of fun with it because we were expecting to get flogged.

“But we were winning at the end of the first quarter, so we kept our formation.

“It was just our day.”

It has only taken 15 games for Cowwarr to find their groove and confidence, with Bourke saying last weekend’s game against Woodside was by far the best game they have played this season.

“It is a bit sad we only have one game left now,” she said.

The Saints’ own Erin Campbell was awarded NADOC player of the game.

“Erin Campbell was best on field,” Bourke said.

“Kayla Woodall also played a cracking game, as she always does.”

In B Grade, the Wildcats celebrated two victories; their 38-29 win over the Saints and Kristy Lucas’ 250th game of netball for Woodside.

Lucas is the first netballer and second person at the club to reach 250 games for the Wildcats.

Playing in three premierships, coaching, coordinating, and umpiring, Lucas is a fundamental part of the Woodside FNC.
