EXCITEMENT is brewing for the Sale-Maffra Badminton Association Veterans Tournament, to be held over two days this weekend.

It will be the fourth time the club has hosted a veterans’ event.

The competition is open to clubs across the state, with more than 300 people expected to attend, including 206 participants coming to the area alone.

Clubs from as far afield as Albury, Boort and Geelong have entered teams in the event across multiple grades.

In total, 26 teams will compete, including three from Sale-Maffra – with some players participating for the first time.

“I think we’ve got five or six people playing for Sale-Maffra this year that have never played a veterans tournament,” committee member John Burley told the Gippsland Times.

Games will be shared between the Mick Mundy Stadium, which has four designated badminton courts, and the neighbouring, much larger Gippsland Regional Sports Complex (GRSC), which is capable of hosting up to 30 teams.

The event begins at 9am tomorrow, and is scheduled to conclude at 2.30pm on Sunday with a raffle and awards ceremony.

Burley encourages visitors and the general public alike to attend: “Everyone by all means is welcome.”

Both the GRSC and Mick Mundy Stadium are located on Cobains Road, Sale.

The Sale-Maffra Badminton Association is currently hosting a local pennant on Monday evenings, plus a social hit on Wednesday evenings from 7pm.
