CATHOLIC College Sale’s senior netball side finished runner-up at the 2023 Marist Netball Carnival, held last month in Perth (June 19 – 21).

CCS lost just one of its 12 pool matches across the first two days of the competition, placing them second overall and guaranteeing a spot in the semi-finals.

The side encountered Traralgon’s Lavalla Catholic College in the semi, ensuring their local Gippsland rivalry lived on. A strong team performance ensured an 18-12 win, and a shot at the title.

In a highly-entertaining Grand Final, CCS were defeated by Sacred Heart College, Adelaide – who went through the carnival undefeated – by a margin of 26-18.

Kate van der Voort (Day 1), and Kate Ronchi (Day 2) were named as the CCS ‘Players of the day’.

At the final awards ceremony, CCS had seven of its ten players make either the ‘All-Australian’ or ‘Highly Recommended’ team following their efforts across the competition. Both teams were chosen by former Australian representatives Gaye Teede and Stella Northey.

In the Marist All-Australian team, Kate van der Voort (GD), Ash McDonough (WA), Hannah Abdallah (WD) and Ciara Fitt (GK) were selected.

Placing in the ‘Highly Recommended’ team were Scarlett Morris (C), Millie Lamb (GS) and Kate Ronchi (GA).

Following the completion of the pool matches, players and coaches were treated to a dinner at Newman College and a Q&A session with Australian Diamonds team member and Commonwealth Games Gold medallist, Courtney Bruce.

The 2023 Marist Netball Carnival ran from Sunday, June 18 to Wednesday, June 21 and featured 13 schools from around Australia.

This was the first time the Marist Netball Carnival had run since 2019, when it was held in Alice Springs.

Team Manager and CCS Sports Coordinator, Jamie Murphy praised the team and the carnival organisers.

“We couldn’t be prouder of our team,” Murphy said.

“They performed at an incredibly high and consistent level across the competition and they represented the College exceptionally well in the process.

“The team had a fantastic few days in Perth. The staff at Newman College were incredibly hospitable and put on a thoroughly enjoyable and successful event.

“We are already looking forward to next year’s carnival.”
