Marriage is ‘inherently unequal’

LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

AN intriguing aspect of the agitation for same sex marriage is the slogan-based plea for marriage equality.

For marriage is inherently unequal.

The prince marries Cinderella and others miss out.

Indeed, even within marriage inequality is the norm.

The mother bears the heavy lifting in child bearing, while the father has other unique responsibilities.

In short, marriage is more about mutual love than it is about equality.

Certainly, families look for communal support when bearing the burden of passing on life to the next generation.

And governments certainly have heavy responsibilities for providing this support.

However, parliamentary competence in the area of legislating for love is far more problematical.
