LETTER TO THE EDITOR:
NOT only am I disappointed Darren Chester decided to support same sex marriage against the wishes of the majority in his electorate and his party, I am also disgusted by the way he has reacted to the community’s concern.
Our Federal Member has incited chaos and dissention over Facebook all because someone dared to stand up to him and hold him accountable to his promise.
Many commenting on Mr Chester’s latest Facebook status have unashamedly named individuals and churches in our community and levelled accusations and speculation at them.
Yet Darren wonders why his Facebook “consultation” only yielded one result?
That was not even close to consultation.
For six years Darren has sworn on a number of occasions to uphold traditional marriage in accordance with his party’s values and his electorate’s majority views.
Did he really think there wouldn’t be a reaction when he decided to jump sides?
Did Mr Chester really believe one line on his website stating he now wasn’t sure of his position be adequate notification for his party and his electorate?
Does he really believe that after a sham week-long Facebook consultation we would believe his claims that he had widely consulted the electorate?
Mr Chester’s determination to ignore these important questions and focus instead on his right of reply to articles in last Tuesday’s Gippsland Times shows just how self-focussed he is.
This is a much bigger issue than Darren and his media coverage.
This law will affect every facet of our society.
Only a little research will show you the countries which have legalised same-sex marriage have opened the door to a never-ending stream of minority groups scrambling for their piece of the pie and continually redefining what marriage and family means.
In Massachusetts three women have married and are having a child.
In Paris someone has ‘married’ the Eiffel Tower.
Others are trying to marry their pets.
In Sweden, gender is banned from primary schools, no boys, no girls, just “people”.
Again in Massachusetts there have been three attempts at introducing mandatory gay sexual education in high schools, containing explicitly graphic material.
All over the United States pastors and businesses are getting sued for refusing to marry gay couples or service their weddings.
Let’s learn from what other countries have experienced instead of trialing this social experiment in Australia.
The full impacts of this law have not been thought through by our leaders.
I am sick of marriage being a political weapon used by politicians for their own personal gain with little regard for the impact it will have on anyone else.
