LETTER TO THE EDITOR:
I WOULD like to see the Victorian Federal electorate McMillan changed from the despicable McMillan name to Gunai Kurnai.
Angus McMillan, (August, 14, 1810 to May 18, 1865), was an explorer, mass murderer and pioneer pastoralist in Gippsland.
Arriving in Australia in 1838, he rose swiftly in colonial society, amassing significant wealth through the hunting of Aborigines, massacring them and then using their land for grazing.
To expand and stabilise his pastoral interests, he led many of the Gippsland massacres of 1840 to 1850, which killed or drove away the region’s indigenous population.
The McMillan electorate is named for him.
