LETTER TO THE EDITOR:
RENAMING Wellington Entertainment Centre the Wedge is a disgrace.
The Wedge definition: a device used for splitting, something that intrudes causes division.
The anecdotal name The Wedge is totally inappropriate for the Wellington Entertainment Centre.
The architect designed the building to be inclusive. The shape of a wedge was constructed to draw the attention of tourists and travellers heading along the highway through the space down to the Port of Sale.
He would travel from Melbourne even before he has contracted, sit in the cafe opposite the vacant site and visualise what could be.
The name Wellington Entertainment Centre was very carefully considered by council as being very important to ensure that it was inclusive, that all the people and towns in the shire felt that it was theirs, not just another structure for Sale.
People throughout the shire contributed their hard earned money towards the fundraising effort to ensure the project got off the ground.
These people were recognised on an honour board that was prominently located in the foyer.
This honour board has now been moved out of the foyer to a position at the front of the building, so high a giraffe would be lucky to see it.
Cr McCubin suggests in Friday’s Gippsland Times that decisions by previous councils should be respected.
