LETTER TO THE EDITOR
LEADER of the federal opposition Anthony Albanase recently addressed the National Press Club.
The main thrust of his address was the disappointing result, for Labor, of the recent election.
He acknowledged that some Labor policies did not appeal to grassroot voters. In particular some ideological influences had devastating negative impact on the outcome of the election for Labor.
It seems that the Victorian government is impervious to these realities. In particular, “native forest harvesting will be axed over the next 10 years” (GT 8/11).
The reason for this axing appears to be concern for Victoria’s faunal emblem the Leadbeater’s possum, and no doubt the ubiquitous activism associated with climate change.
Yet our forests have provided an essential renewable resource from at least aboriginal times. This resource has been crucial for such infrastructures as railways, electricity, closer settlement and so on.
It is to be hoped that the common sense of the electorate will prevail in Victoria in order to restore sensible government.
