New name for saleyards

THE saleyards in Sale will have a new name to go with its refurbishment.

Wellington Shire Council this week voted to change the name of the Sale Livestock Exchange to the Gippsland Regional Livestock Exchange.

According to council, the new name better described the future capabilities of the refurbished facility.

The redeveloped livestock exchange facility will boast state of the art infrastructure, including a specialised soft floor for livestock. The saleyards  refurbishment aims to attract farmers and stock agents from across Victoria.

Wellington Shire mayor Carolyn Crossley said it was important to recognise the pivotal role the new facility would play in the Wellington shire’s and Gippsland’s farming industry.

“We have worked very closely with the (facility operator) Victorian Livestock Exchange, local farmers and stock agents in designing and developing this facility in a way that suits everyone’s needs,” she said.

“With completion of the project nearing, we are very excited at this facility’s potential to be a major drawcard for agricultural business to the region.

“Costing council $3.3 million, this project is a great indicator of the importance we place on our agricultural industry and its potential for growth.”

VLE chief executive Wayne Osborne said his organisation had enjoyed working with council collaboratively on the project.

“Wellington Shire Council has been very good at listening to us but also to the agents and the livestock carriers and the vendors,” he said.

“They’ve come in very open minded and respectful to everyone which has allowed us to put forward experiences out of our other yards to make this new facility as good as we can.”

The redeveloped Gippsland Regional Livestock Exchange is on track to be finished by early 2016.

The new name was among a list of recommendations from council’s place names committee accepted.

Council approved requests from developers to use the name “Moon” for a subdivision in Maffra and the name “Kestrel” for another subdivision, and to call an unnamed road off Beverleys Rd, Stockdale, Jalandook Lane.
