More than 50 take shelter in Sale

A TOTAL of 51 people registered at an emergency relief centre which was established at Sale Baptist Church, Princes Highway, on Friday, with 21 staying overnight.

They were residents of Sale, Longford and Wurruk who had evacuated their homes, along with five dogs and four cats.

In addition, five recreational vehicles and caravans stayed overnight in the emergency centre carpark.

The relief centre was staffed by Wellington Shire Council council officers, the Red Cross, Sale Baptist Church and the Victorian Council of Churches volunteers.

Sale and District Agricultural Society also opened the Sale Showgrounds for people to take their horses, with five horses housed at the showgrounds overnight and moved to other locations by their owners Saturday morning.

Council staff also monitored animals at council’s municipal pound, run by Animal Aid, but they did not need to be evacuated.

The emergency relief centre has now been stood down, but council is continuing to work closely with emergency services agencies to monitor the situation.
