Police officer found guilty of assault

A POLICE officer found guilty of unlawfully assaulting a person in custody in September 2016 has been convicted and placed on a 12-month good behaviour bond.

Senior Constable Dallas Howell was found guilty of two counts of unlawful assault earlier this month.

IBAC, the Independent Broad-based Anti-corruption Commission, charged Senior Constable Howell with assault offences in February 2018.

The charges were the result of IBAC’s ‘own motion’ investigation, Operation Poros, into an incident at Moe Police Station in September 2017.

IBAC chief executive Alistair Maclean said IBAC performed a critical role in independently oversighting Victoria Police to ensure officers were accountable and conducted themselves in a way consistent with the community’s expectations.

“It is important that police officers perform their duties and exercise their significant powers fairly, impartially and in accordance with the law,” he said.
