SALE United put in a brave performance in the Gippsland Soccer League grand final, going down 2-0 to Moe United.

With captain Ash Ross on the sidelines with a knee injury and midfielder Raymond Allred hampered by a shoulder injury, the Swans’ situation became worse in the second half when goalkeeper Chris Richardson came off second best in a collision with a Moe player.

Richardson remained in goal for 30 minutes before being substituted, but during that time the Red Devils scored both their goals.

Matt Shearing got on the end of a great through ball before moving into the penalty area to open the scoring 17 minutes into the second half.

Brent Charleston made it 2-0 16 minutes later.

The Red Devils dominated in the midfield, making it hard for the Swans to move forward.

The Swans did have their chances, with Dean Nichols’ shot in the opening minutes blocked by the Moe keeper, while Tommy Nguyen’s free late in the first half came off the woodwork.

The Swans still have a chance to claim some silverware from the season when they play Falcons in the Battle of Britain Cup final this Sunday at Morwell.

SALE United’s youth division grand final was postponed after it emerged its opponent Falcons may have fielded an ineligible player in the semi-final against Monash.
