SALE-Maffra began the defence of its Melbourne Country Week cricket title with victory over Bairnsdale on Monday.
Sent in to bat at Casey Fields, Cranbourne, the Sharks made 9-220 from their 50 overs before bowling Bairnsdale out for 160.
Brett Lanigan (24), Cormac Hassett (20) and captain Jack Tatterson (30) provided a solid base for the Sale-Maffra innings, but were unable to go on with the job. Josh Rurawhe provided the backbone, scoring 62 before being trapped leg before wicket by former Shark Dylan Bolton.
Nick Davies claimed four of the final five wickets, as Ben Jones scored 21 and Jack Wrigglesworth 23 to give Bairnsdale a competitive target.
Bairnsdale struggled in reply, reaching 7-112 after 30 overs before being bowled out 60 runs short of the Sharks’ total. Josh Davis claimed 3-42 and Brandon McDonald 2-36.
Hayden Erfurth (70) and Scott Davidson (25) made the only scores of substance. Together they put on 44 runs for the fifth wicket.
With 12 overs remaining in the day, Bairnsdale put in a better effort with the ball as Sale-Maffra collapsed to 5-19 before ending on 5-36.
Hassett top-scored for Sale-Maffra with an unbeaten 11, while Uli Van Duyker took three wickets and Jamie Robinson two for Bairnsdale.
On Tuesday, Sale-Maffra will play Warrnambool at Box Hill.
