SALE-Maffra’s hopes of making the Melbourne Country Week cricket final took a blow on Tuesday, when it lost to Warrnambool by one wicket.
The defeat at Box Hill leaves the Sharks in fourth place, with Geelong and Bendigo the only defeated sides in the provincial division.
After Sale-Maffra was restricted to 9-186 from its 50 overs, Warrnambool fell to 7-108 before a 42-run partnership between Kyle Humphrys and Josh Stapleton (36) frustrated the Sharks.
When Humphrys was dismissed for 24, Warrnambool still required 36 runs to win.
The Sharks appeared set for victory when Stapleton was out 36, leaving Warrnambool needing 22 more runs, however the batting team scored the winning runs in the penultimate over with a wicket in hand.
Warrnambool finished on 9-190 with Nathan Murphy also scoring 36. Josh Davis claimed three more wickets for Sale-Maffra, with two each from Ben Jones and Jack Rietschel.
During the Sale-Maffra innings, Jack Wrigglesworth scored an unbeaten 32, Josh Rurawhe made 29, Cormac Hassett 24 and Ben Jones 21.
The innings included three partnerships in the 30s, but Warrnambool was able to stem the flow of runs with regular wickets. Opening bowler Hank Schlaghecke took three wickets.
On Wednesday, Sale-Maffra will meet Mornington Peninsula at Oakleigh.
