Elite youth hit the court

TWO magnificent autumn days welcomed 15 and under players from around country Victoria to the Sale Tennis Club for the 2016 Bradtke-Luczak Cup.

The six regions represented were Barwon, Central Gippsland, East Gippsland, Goulburn, Mornington Peninsula and South West. The two boys and two girls per team format saw four singles and two mixed doubles per rubber.

After the five round robin rubbers, the strong Central Gippsland team was on top of the table undefeated, followed by South West, Barwon, Goulburn, East Gippsland and Mornington Peninsula.

In the preliminary rounds, South West had pushed Central Gippsland to within six games, so an exciting final was anticipated. This was exactly how it turned out, with Central Gippsland winning the boy’s singles, but South West fighting back in the girl’s before Central Gippsland took both of the mixed rubbers to run out winners for the third year in a row.

East Gippsland finished in fifth place.

Sale Tennis Club president Robin Lowe said the club members were delighted to see some of Victoria’s best juniors competing locally.

“The standard of tennis was exceptional for this age group, and it was a great experience for our East Gippsland team of Taylor Stephenson (Sale), Will Runciman, Mia Stevens (Maffra) and Amber Archer (Bairnsdale) to play against teams of this standard,” he said.

“They acquitted themselves very well, the experience they have gained from this weekend will benefit them for the coming pennant seasons and the rest of their tennis careers.”
